One of the most difficult parts of translating Dream of the Red Chamber into English is accounting for the cultural connotations of certain terms.
It’s easy to think of a term like 知己 as a “friend.” However, the term itself has a much deeper linguistic connotation than just “friend.” And this is where a lot of the existing translations of Dream of the Red Chamber simply fall short.
