Humble Language

秦可卿生病 sick qin keqing

We saw in yesterday’s translation post that Dr. Zhang used extremely deferential language when he first met with Jia Zhen.

It’s actually pretty common in Chinese literature to see a person of great ability and renown use modest and deferential language, especially when he’s asked to do something by somebody else. But the example we saw yesterday really feels a little bit over the top.

Some of the phrases that Dr. Zhang used when he was first introduced seem overwhelming and even exaggerated when used together.
