The subject here might seem extremely geeky, but it’s actually an interesting part of the flavor of the original text of Dream of the Red Chamber.
It’s almost impossible to adequately translate the shifting registers of the novel into English, or any other language for that matter. And this is one of the reasons why any translation into English really needs to be accompanied by commentary.
