Lady You’s Odd Statement
The nice thing about making this translation at my own pace and using a blog as the “publishing” platform is that I can go slowly and dig into strange things that come up.
This is one of those moments. There’s something kind of bizarre going on in yesterday’s translation post, and I simply can’t just let it go by.
Wang Xifeng finally goes back to where the others have gathered together to watch the performance of various Chinese opera tunes. Remember that she was held up because of Jia Rui’s inappropriate advances:
And so it doesn’t make much sense when Lady You remarks this way upon seeing Wang Xifeng finally arrive:
尤氏笑道:「你們孃兒兩個忒好了,見了面總捨不得來了。你明日搬來和他同住罷。」
“You two certainly make a great pair!” said Lady You. Once you two meet up, you can’t be separated. You ought to move in with her tomorrow.”
What in the world does Lady You mean by “你們孃兒兩個,” or “you two, the mother-daughter pair?”
