Outsider And Insider
Lin Daiyu seems to be extremely sensitive about her status as an outsider in the Jia family. In fact, that helps explain why she snaps at Jia Baoyu’s former nanny (surnamed Li) in yesterday’s translation post.
When the nanny tries to get Baoyu to stop drinking, Daiyu says this:
必定姨媽這裡是外人，不當在這裡吃，也未可知！
Perhaps you think of Auntie’s household as outsiders, Nanny. Perhaps this is a place where it’s improper for him to drink. Maybe that’s what you’re thinking!
