There was an interesting part of the doctor’s response to Jia Zhen in yesterday’s post that you probably didn’t notice.
This is how I translated it:
方才這裡大爺也和我說了,但只今日拜了一天的客,才回到家,此時精神實在不能支援,就是去到府上,也不能看脈,須得調息一夜,明日務必到府。
The young master here has already spoken to me about this. However, I just got back home after visiting people all day, and I’m too tired to be of any use at the moment. Even if I were to visit your house now, I would be in no state to properly perform an examination. I intend to rest tonight, but I’ll certainly go to your house tomorrow.
But the interesting verb here, 調息, doesn’t really mean “intend to rest.”
