The Prescription
Those of you who are well versed in the world of Chinese medicine will probably snark at my confusion over Dr. Zhang’s prescription in our last translation segment.
I’m not going to try to play myself up as somebody actually knowledgable about the intricacies of traditional Chinese medicine. I understand from what others have written and said that the prescription Cao Xueqin created is perfectly valid in terms of traditional Chinese medicine theory.
My bigger question is what we can learn in a narrative sense from this prescription. And I’ve got a few thoughts about that.
