Most people who talk about character rivalries in Dream of the Red Chamber focus only on the love rivalry between Lin Daiyu and Xue Baochai.
The Lin Daiyu - Xue Baochai rivalry is indeed important, and we’ll get to it when Xue Baochai is formally introduced in a couple of weeks. However, the really interesting comparison is between Wang Xifeng and Lin Daiyu.
We saw a little glimpse of this rivalry in yesterday’s translation post. However, if we dig a little bit deeper, we’ll see that the two characters are foils for each other if you think about it.
